4-Day Happy Angkor Exploration Itinerary
Day 1: The Icons – Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei, and Banteay Samre
Depart at 7:30 AM to discover the crown jewels of Angkor Archaeological Park. Begin your morning at Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest religious monument in the world. Next, head out to the Grand Circuit to marvel at Banteay Srei, famed for its miniature scale and remarkably intricate pink sandstone carvings. Conclude your day’s adventure by exploring the historic temples of Pre Rup and Banteay Samre.
Day 2: Ancient Capitals – Angkor Thom, Preah Khan, and Ta Prohm
Spend your morning discovering the ancient royal city of Angkor Thom. Pass through the monumental South Gate to reach Bayon, famous for its enigmatic smiling stone faces. From there, take a walk through Baphuon, the Royal Palace grounds, the Elephant Terrace, and the Leper King Terrace.
In the afternoon, continue to Preah Khan, a sprawling 12th-century temple complex built by King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. Finally, venture off the beaten path to the hidden jungle temple of Ta Nei before wrapping up your day at the iconic, tree-entwined ruins of Ta Prohm (celebrated as the Tomb Raider temple).
Day 3: Cultural Heritage and the Roluos Group
Begin your day at the Roluos Group, located 14 km east of Siem Reap. Once known as Hariharalaya, this site served as the very first capital of the Khmer Empire north of the Tonle Sap lake. Here, you will explore three foundational 9th-century temples: Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei.
For the remainder of the day, customize your experience by choosing one of the following two options:
-
Option 1: The Great Lake Experience Take a scenic boat ride to a floating community like Kompong Phluk or Chong Kneas on the Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. Gain a fascinating glimpse into how local fishing communities live, work, and thrive directly on the water.
-
Option 2: Siem Reap Town & Culture Immerse yourself in local history, arts, and shopping with guided visits to the Angkor National Museum, the Artisans Angkor craft center, and a vibrant local market.
Following your chosen activity, you will be transferred safely back to your hotel.
Day 4: Remote Wonders – Banteay Chhmar and Banteay Torp
After breakfast at 7:30 AM, your journey begins with an exploration of the spectacular temples tucked away in northwest Cambodia near the Thai border. Leaving the main Angkor complex behind, you will travel through picturesque countryside and local villages to reach Banteay Chhmar. Built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century to honor his son, Srindrakumara, this massive temple complex mirrors the mesmerizing architectural style of the Bayon.
Next, visit the nearby Banteay Torp (Fortress of the Army) in Banteay Meanchey province. Though small, its strikingly tall, weathered towers are incredibly photogenic. Built during the same era, it stands as a historic tribute to King Jayavarman VII’s army following their decisive victory over the Chams.
